Canada overhauls Express Entry: extra CRS points for high-wage job offers from Nov 3

· N GLOBE

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced yesterday that from November 3, Express Entry's CRS will award extra points for eligible Canadian work experience and high-wage job offers, while dropping the LMIA requirement.

Why it matters

This is the most substantial overhaul of Express Entry scoring in years: Canadian work experience and high-wage job offers become new points categories, while the LMIA hurdle is removed. It most benefits candidates who already have Canadian work experience.

What changes

Announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Minister Lena Metlege Diab on October 16 in Kitchener, Ontario: from November 3, Express Entry will award additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for eligible Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation, such as engineers and electricians. Candidates qualifying under both receive whichever option yields more points; they are not combined. Up to 150 points are available under the labour-market integration factor (140 with an accompanying spouse).

IRCC will also no longer require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for a qualifying job offer to earn the new points or to meet job-offer requirements under the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades programs. IRCC will still assess job offers to confirm they are genuine, with anti-fraud measures in place.

What candidates must do

Candidates already in the pool will have their CRS scores automatically recalculated under the new system, including points for eligible Canadian work experience. Those seeking job-offer points must update their profiles with the required job-offer information before November 3. Recalculation may take up to two weeks, during which invitation rounds will be paused. Extra points do not guarantee an invitation; each round depends on the cut-off score.
