Canada Overhauls Express Entry: Extra Points for High-Wage Jobs From Nov 3, No LMIA Needed

· N GLOBE

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced today that Express Entry scoring will reward high-wage Canadian work experience and qualifying job offers from November 3, and qualifying job offers will no longer need an LMIA.

Why it matters

This is the biggest shake-up of the Express Entry scoring system in recent years, directly affecting the CRS scores and invitation chances of hundreds of thousands of skilled immigration candidates. Canadian work experience in high-wage occupations becomes an explicit scoring factor for the first time, clearly favouring skilled talent already working in Canada.

Full report

The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today in Kitchener, Ontario that starting November 3, 2026, IRCC will award additional points to candidates with eligible Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation, such as engineers and electricians, better aligning the system with Canada's economic and labour market needs.

IRCC is also cutting red tape: as of November 3, a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) will no longer be required for a qualifying job offer to receive the new Express Entry points or to meet job offer requirements under the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. IRCC will continue to assess job offers to confirm they are genuine, with anti-fraud measures in place.

Candidates already in the Express Entry pool will have their scores automatically recalculated under the new system, a process that may take up to two weeks, during which invitation rounds will be paused. Candidates seeking points for a qualifying job offer must update their profiles with the required information before November 3.

The minister said Canada is competing globally for the skilled people needed to build a prosperous economy, and the changes will help identify, attract and retain the newcomers best positioned to succeed in Canada's labour market.
