The final at Singapore's OCBC Arena lasted 1 hour 38 minutes. Gibson twice recovered from a break down in the opener and held a set point at 5-4 on Fernandez's serve; the Canadian held, took the set 7-5, then reeled off nine straight games to sweep the second set 6-0. Fernandez hit five aces and converted six of 12 break points.
Road to the title
Fernandez dropped just one set all week: she beat top seed and French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in straight sets in the quarterfinals, then rallied past French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semis. Gibson was playing her first career WTA final, reaching it after a semifinal walkover and an upset of Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.
