On Monday, Sept. 28, Ford and Smith appeared together at the Enserva Speaker Series at Calgary's TELUS Convention Centre before more than 800 energy and business leaders. The discussion focused on getting Canada's natural resources to market and strengthening energy security and economic competitiveness.
Ford said Albertans should stay in Canada. The Oct. 19 referendum includes 10 questions, one of which asks voters whether Alberta should remain in Confederation or hold a second, binding referendum on separation.
Smith said: "Canada has the energy, resources and expertise the world needs, and Alberta is ready to deliver." She called for infrastructure to reach new markets, attract investment and create jobs.
The two still differ on tactics in the tariff war with the United States: Smith has rejected using oil as leverage against President Donald Trump, while Ford disagrees — but both agree more oil must flow within Canada. The event builds on the "Northern Shield" west-east pipeline concept the premiers unveiled in July; a feasibility study is still underway.
