Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment lands today, second quarterly payout of the year

· N GLOBE

The CRA confirms October 5 as the second quarterly Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment date of the year; eligible households with direct deposit receive it today.

Why it matters

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirms that today, October 5, is the second quarterly payment date of the year for the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB). Eligible low- and modest-income households with direct deposit set up receive the money today.

About the benefit

The CGEB replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026 with the same eligibility, calculation and structure: tax-free quarterly payments to help with the rising cost of everyday essentials. Amounts rose 25% in July 2026 and stay at that level for five years (2026–2031). Filing taxes automatically puts you in consideration — no separate application needed — and direct deposit is the fastest way to be paid. The July and October payments are based on 2025 adjusted family net income.

Good to know

If the quarterly amount is under $50, the full amount is paid once in July instead. The CRA advises anyone who has not received an expected payment to check their CRA account status and personal details first, and to wait 10 business days after the expected date before calling. This year's payment dates were January 5 and April 2 (as GST/HST credit), July 3 and October 5.
