Canada and India to begin fifth round of trade talks on Oct. 5, eye year-end deal

Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu announced that Canada and India will open a fifth round of comprehensive economic partnership talks on Oct. 5, aiming to conclude a deal before the end of 2026.
Why it matters
Canada is accelerating its push for a trade deal with India. The fifth negotiating round runs Oct. 5–9, the fastest-paced round since the two countries relaunched talks and signed terms of reference in March 2026, with both sides targeting a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) by year-end.
How it unfolded
Sidhu announced the timetable after meeting Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Milwaukee. It follows the fourth round, which just wrapped up in Mumbai. Sidhu said the goal is not just any deal, but one that works for businesses and workers in both countries.
Targets and trade mission
Two-way trade currently tops $30 billion, with a shared goal of $70 billion by 2030. Sidhu will also lead a Team Canada Trade Mission of nearly 300 Canadian business delegates to India from Oct. 12–17, chasing opportunities in energy, critical minerals and other sectors.
