Ottawa renews $300M for Indigenous-led housing initiative
Ottawa confirms $300 million in renewed funding for NICHI's "For Indigenous, By Indigenous" housing initiative, bringing total federal investment to $581.5 million.
Why it matters
NICHI is the national Indigenous-led body putting federal housing dollars directly in the hands of Indigenous providers. This second round of funding keeps projects moving from planning into construction across urban, rural and northern communities.
The funding supports a long-term Urban, Rural, and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy grounded in Indigenous leadership. Since 2023, NICHI has moved money quickly to communities, backing about 77 Indigenous-led housing projects and contributing to roughly 3,800 housing units and beds, reaching more than 6,000 Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast.
The need remains large: the 2021 Census found more than 171,000 Indigenous Peoples in urban, rural and northern areas off reserve were in core housing need. The renewed investment will help keep momentum in Indigenous housing delivery as Build Canada Homes advances its work with Indigenous providers.

Indigenous Services Canada confirmed $300 million in renewed funding for NICHI's "For Indigenous, By Indigenous" (FIBI) housing initiative, bringing the federal government's total investment with NICHI to $581.5 million.
Funding covers new capital developments, repair and renovation of existing Indigenous housing stock, and organizational and capacity development. NICHI represents more than 130 Indigenous housing and service providers nationally.
"A home is more than four walls. It is where families build their lives, where children grow up, and where people should be able to feel safe and secure," said Gull-Masty. NICHI CEO John Gordon said the commitment reflects Ottawa's confidence that a "For Indigenous, By Indigenous" approach delivers results for communities.
