Bank of Canada governor says market enthusiasm for AI "may have gone too far"

Tiff Macklem told the Institute of International Finance in Bangkok that equity markets "look stressed," and warned rising energy prices could feed broader inflation.
Why it matters
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem spoke at the annual meeting of the Institute of International Finance (IIF) in Bangkok, delivering the central bank chief's most direct warning yet about the AI-driven stock rally, with implications for inflation and rate expectations.
What he said
According to Dow Jones Newswires, Macklem said the stock market's enthusiasm about artificial intelligence "may have gone too far" and that equity markets "look stressed." AI will be transformative, he said, but "it could be a disruptive transition." He stressed this was not investment advice, but an observation of market conditions.
Inflation and energy
Macklem said he was concerned that energy prices could keep rising and affect other prices more broadly: "Every major central bank is worried." He noted the wars in the Middle East keep energy costs elevated, countries including China tapped strategic reserves to cushion the impact, but "you can only release your strategic reserves so many times," and "at some point China will have to come back" into the market. Later this week he joins an IMF panel on AI's effects on productivity, employment and financial stability.
