Manitoba PC leader Obby Khan quits caucus as legislature resumes; interim leader vote today
Manitoba's legislature resumes today with the Opposition PCs leaderless: Obby Khan suddenly resigned Monday and quit the caucus to sit as an Independent; the caucus meets this morning to pick an interim leader.
Why it matters
Manitoba's legislature resumes sitting today with the Opposition Progressive Conservatives in the unusual position of having no leader. The Tory caucus said it will meet this morning to select an interim leader to replace Obby Khan, who resigned suddenly on Monday and quit the PC caucus to sit as an Independent.
What happened
Khan said he is leaving the leadership job effective today and is also leaving the party caucus. He cited internal party feuding and efforts to undermine his leadership as the reason. The move leaves the Tories with 19 seats in the house, compared with 34 for Premier Wab Kinew's NDP, one Liberal, and now three Independents including Khan.
Reaction and outlook
Christopher Adams, an adjunct professor of political science at the University of Manitoba, called it "a very sad day for the PC party." He said cascading events — from Kinew's polling popularity to the Tories' declining support in Winnipeg — left Khan with little choice, and that the party must win back suburban Winnipeg to turn things around. The next provincial general election is scheduled for October 2027, more than a year away.
