Canada declares measles outbreak over after two-year spread, 6,400+ cases

· N GLOBE

PHAC announced Oct. 19 that the multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak that began in October 2024 is over, more than two months since the last linked case.

Why it matters

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) announced on Oct. 19 in Ottawa that Canada's multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak is over, with more than two months passed since the last case linked to the outbreak was reported. The outbreak began in October 2024 and caused more than 6,400 cases across 10 provinces and territories, most in people who had not been vaccinated against measles.

Full report

Because the outbreak strain kept spreading for more than 12 months, Canada lost its global measles elimination status in late 2025. Responding required close cooperation across federal, provincial, territorial and local public health systems: provinces and territories led case and contact tracing, surveillance, lab testing, community outreach and expanded vaccination, while PHAC provided national coordination, technical advice, surveillance and laboratory expertise, and the federal government supported the response through vaccine regulation and procurement plus emergency preparedness.

PHAC said measles continues to spread in many parts of the world and travel-related cases are expected to keep occurring in Canada. Health Minister Marjorie Michel and Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Joss Reimer issued statements praising public health workers and urging Canadians to keep routine vaccinations up to date to prevent future outbreaks.
