Ottawa signs deal with New Brunswick: $305M+ for infrastructure over 10 years, $155M for health facilities over 3
Under the Build Communities Strong Fund's provincial-territorial stream, federal money will renovate Moncton's Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital — adding 12 endoscopy rooms — and fund planning for a major ER, oncology and obstetrics rebuild. The province pledges no new fees or taxes that hinder housing supply.
Why it matters
The federal government and the Government of New Brunswick have finalized an agreement under the Provincial-Territorial stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund, locking in long-term funding for housing, post-secondary education infrastructure and health facilities in the province. The province has also committed not to raise any fees or taxes that would hinder housing supply.
What's in the deal
The agreement provides more than $305 million over 10 years for infrastructure projects tied to housing and post-secondary education, plus more than $155 million over three years for health infrastructure, complementing existing federal health support. The first projects are in Moncton: a federal investment of more than $11 million to renovate roughly 13,800 sq. ft. inside Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital, creating 12 endoscopy rooms, and $500,000 to complete the planning and design work for a major redevelopment of the hospital's Emergency, Oncology and Obstetrics departments. The Dumont hospital is the largest in the Vitalité Health Network.
