NEXUS interview booking window shrinks back to two years starting April 2027

· N GLOBE

CBSA ends the COVID-era five-year booking window: conditional approvals from April 1, 2027 get two years to schedule the interview; earlier approvals must finish by April 1, 2029.

Why it matters

Starting April 1, 2027, travellers who receive conditional approval for NEXUS will have two years — not five — to schedule their enrolment interview. The COVID-era extension is ending as interview capacity has been restored.

Full report

The Canada Border Services Agency announced the change on October 1 in Ottawa. The five-year booking window was a temporary measure to absorb pandemic-era backlogs; with more enrolment interview capacity now available, the program is returning to its original two-year rule.

Applicants conditionally approved on or after April 1, 2027 must schedule their interview within two years of the approval date. Those approved before that date keep the five-year window, but must complete the process by April 1, 2029 at the latest — whichever comes first. Anyone already waiting for an interview is urged to book as soon as possible so the application does not expire.

Finalizing membership requires an interview with both CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, covering identity verification, fingerprinting and eligibility questions. NEXUS speeds border clearance for low-risk travellers at select ports of entry and also unlocks TSA PreCheck and Global Entry benefits. About 1.7 million Canadians are enrolled; memberships last five years and cost US$120.
