Ottawa announces $100 million for Nova Scotia offshore wind projects

Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, Justice Minister and ACOA lead Sean Fraser and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston jointly announced federal funding this morning in Nova Scotia: The Canadian Press reports Ottawa is putting $100 million toward offshore wind projects in the province, advancing Canada's first-ever offshore wind developments.
Why it matters
The federal government announced new offshore wind funding in Nova Scotia this morning: Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, Justice Minister and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency lead Sean Fraser and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston made the joint announcement at 9:15 a.m. Atlantic time. The Canadian Press reports the federal commitment is $100 million for offshore wind projects in the province.
It is another step toward Canada's first offshore wind projects. In July, Ottawa and Nova Scotia jointly designated four wind energy areas (French Bank, Middle Bank, Sable Island Bank and Sydney Bight), and the Canada–Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator has since begun a prequalification process and a call for information ahead of a formal call for bids. The federal Major Projects Office last week also said it would advance projects of national importance, including Wind West Atlantic Energy.
What officials say
Hodgson has called the push "another leap toward Canada becoming the global supplier of choice for energy," while Fraser said Atlantic Canada has "the wind, the people and the ambition to lead the clean energy future" — turning some of the world's strongest winds into jobs, investment and clean, reliable energy.
Nova Scotia aims to develop 5 GW of offshore wind in a first phase. The province has already legislated an annual levy of CAD 7,000 per MW on developers so Nova Scotians benefit directly from the first projects. Ottawa and the province jointly manage the offshore area; the regulator will finalize bidding terms and seabed licensing details.
