Ontario boosts OINP points for high earners: $80,000+ now worth 10 points

· N GLOBE

Ontario announced Oct. 7 that candidates earning $80,000+ a year now receive 10 points under the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream, up from the previous top bracket of $70,000+ for 8 points.

Why it matters

Ontario announced on Oct. 7 that top-earning candidates in its only current provincial nomination pathway now receive 10 points, up from 8 — a meaningful boost for high-income applicants whose earnings are documented on Canadian tax returns.

Full report

The change, implemented on Oct. 5, 2026 and applied automatically to existing profiles, adds a higher bracket to the “Canadian work experience: earnings history” scoring factor under the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream (OWPS), according to a notice posted on the provincial website reported by CIC News.

The earnings factor is now scored as follows: $80,000 or more — 10 points; $70,000–$79,999 — 8 points; $50,000–$69,999 — 6 points; $30,000–$49,999 — 4 points; under $30,000 — 0 points. Previously the top bracket was $70,000 or more for 8 points. Earnings are based on a Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment issued within the past five years.

The OWPS is currently the only available way for foreign nationals to pursue provincial nomination for permanent residence from Ontario, following the province’s overhaul of the OINP that revoked all previous pathways on May 30, 2026.
