Ontario Provincial Police updated the fatal Puslinch crash at a news conference in Rockwood on Sunday, November 1: a vehicle carrying six teenagers left Watson Road South, struck a guardrail and entered a ravine at about 1:35 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, killing four at the scene and injuring two. Puslinch is southeast of Guelph; the crash happened on Watson Road South between Maltby Road East and Wellington Road 34.
Victims aged 15 to 19; one survivor seriously hurt, one stable
Police said those pronounced dead at the scene were a 19-year-old man from Mississauga, a 19-year-old man from Brampton, a 17-year-old girl from Mississauga and a 15-year-old girl from Milton. Both survivors are from Mississauga: a 17-year-old girl remains in hospital with life-altering injuries, while a 16-year-old girl has non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not released the victims' names. Wellington County OPP detachment commander Insp. Karen Medeiros called it an “unimaginable loss”, saying “four young people have lost their lives, in a matter of moments.”
Cause not yet determined; speed and seatbelt use under investigation
Medeiros said investigators are still gathering evidence and it is too early to determine exactly what caused the collision; the investigation includes speed and seatbelt use, and police do not believe the vehicle had enough seatbelts for all six occupants. Watson Road South remained closed between Wellington Road 34 and Maltby Road East because of the damaged guardrail. Police are asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision, especially anyone with dashcam or surveillance video, to contact Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
