A helicopter crashed in a field in Montérégie, Quebec, on Saturday afternoon, killing all four people on board, provincial police said. The aircraft caught fire after going down near the Rang des Écossais in Sainte-Brigide-d'Iberville, about 50 kilometres southeast of Montreal.

Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Audrey-Anne Bilodeau said police were called around 2:30 p.m. after the helicopter crashed and burst into flames. Based on preliminary information, the aircraft was in distress shortly after takeoff before it went down. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within about an hour, and the four occupants were declared dead at the scene.
Police have not confirmed who owned the helicopter, where it took off, where it was headed, or the identities of those on board. The spokesperson told The Canadian Press the helicopter appeared to be a private aircraft. It was unclear whether the fire began in the air or as a result of the crash. Authorities described the story as developing and said more information would be released as the investigation proceeds.
