Canada and Saskatchewan jointly invest over $74M in housing-enabling infrastructure

The federal government and Saskatchewan will invest over $74 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund in 11 wastewater infrastructure projects across the province.
What happened
On October 13, the federal and Saskatchewan governments announced in Yorkton a joint investment of more than $74 million through the Provincial-Territorial stream of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), supporting 11 wastewater infrastructure projects across Saskatchewan, covering water, wastewater, drainage and sewer infrastructure to enable housing growth, community development and economic opportunities.
Funding split
The federal government is investing $40.6 million and the Government of Saskatchewan $33.4 million. The announcement was made by Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State for Rural Development, Saskatchewan's Minister Lori Carr, and Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle.
Key projects
Funding will support Phase 1 of Yorkton's H.M. Bailey Water Pollution Control Plant renewal, increasing treatment capacity and potentially supporting the equivalent of 7,150 additional housing units. In the Town of La Ronge, the sewer system along Bedford Drive and Louis Road will be extended to enable about 124 new housing units. Other projects include water system upgrades in Shellbrook and Arcola, wastewater expansion in Estevan, water improvements in Swift Current, and water and sewer expansion in Big River.
Why it matters
Reliable water and sewer capacity is a prerequisite for new housing approvals. These projects target one of the bottlenecks behind Canada's housing shortage: without infrastructure capacity, new housing permits cannot move forward.
