Saskatchewan Sets Big Nuclear Goal: At Least 2,600 MW by 2050

· N GLOBE

The province released its 'Delivering Energy Security Through Nuclear Power' plan, mapping two large reactors and Estevan SMRs toward at least 2,600 MW of nuclear capacity by 2050.

Why it matters

On September 29, the Government of Saskatchewan released 'Delivering Energy Security Through Nuclear Power,' setting a provincial goal of at least 2,600 megawatts of nuclear generating capacity online by 2050 — one of the clearest nuclear expansion roadmaps of any Canadian province to date.

Key points

The plan rests on four priorities: building electricity capacity for long-term growth; incorporating large reactors into supply planning; continuing small modular reactor (SMR) development in Estevan; and building on capabilities already established.

The timeline: utility SaskPower will begin planning two large nuclear reactors in northwest Saskatchewan, with an initial goal of more than 2,000 MW, the first expected online by 2042. The Rafferty site near Estevan was selected for further SMR study, targeting at least 600 MW using the BWRX-300 technology — the same design Ontario Power Generation is deploying at Darlington.

Premier Scott Moe said: "With our world-class uranium resources, skilled workforce and growing nuclear expertise, Saskatchewan has everything we need to be a global leader in nuclear energy."

Industry reaction

Nuclear firms including Cameco, Westinghouse, GE Vernova Hitachi and AtkinsRéalis welcomed the plan; Cameco's CEO said the company looks forward to competing for the province's business. The Saskatchewan First Nations Natural Resource Centre of Excellence said it expects meaningful First Nations participation in nuclear development.

Context: the plan supplements the province's Saskatchewan First Energy Security Strategy and Supply Plan released in October 2025, as the province prepares for the long-term electricity demand of a growing population, expanding industry and major investment projects.
