On October 2, 2026, Canada's Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, met with Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security and for Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, while attending the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The two discussed the importance of Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent attendance at the EU's State of the Union address and his address to the European Parliament. Sidhu highlighted Canada's desire to work with the EU on a full range of strategic capabilities, including critical minerals, defence and digital trade.

They also marked the upcoming 10th anniversary of the signature of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), noting its success to date, with bilateral merchandise trade close to 80% higher compared to pre-CETA levels.

Sidhu announced that Canada will host the Canada-EU Summit in Montréal, Quebec, on October 29 and 30, 2026. The two also discussed the ongoing negotiations toward a Canada-EU digital trade agreement and will meet later this month in Dublin, Ireland, for the informal meeting of EU trade ministers.
