Canada launches its first Telecom Competition Roadmap: more choice, better prices, stronger networks

Ottawa unveiled Canada's first Telecom Competition Roadmap on October 28, a national framework to break down regional barriers in internet and mobile services and deliver more affordable, reliable connectivity.
The federal government on October 28 launched Canada's first Telecom Competition Roadmap, a national framework for competition in internet and mobile services. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced the roadmap in Ottawa, saying affordable and reliable connectivity is essential to Canadians' everyday lives in a more complex and unpredictable world.
Three directions
The first is more choice: making it easier for competitors to access existing networks and expand their own, breaking down regional barriers toward one Canadian economy. The second is better prices: spotlighting competitive offers, making it easier to compare plans and switch providers, and eliminating unnecessary fees. The third is high-quality networks: supporting fibre deployment and connectivity upgrades, especially in northern, rural and Indigenous communities.
Progress tracked by the numbers
Ottawa says it will monitor prices, switching rates, speeds and coverage to check whether the roadmap delivers real results. The government describes the plan as a comprehensive, national approach to encouraging cross-Canada competition in the sector.
