Canada and UK renew artificial intelligence security partnership

During Minister Evan Solomon's visit to London, Canada and the UK renewed their AI security partnership, focusing on frontier AI risk evaluation, staff exchanges and technical standards.
Why it matters
This is a formal recommitment by both countries on AI security: their AI safety institutes will deepen cooperation, share frontier-model risk assessments, and push for interoperable international AI security standards. For Canada, it pairs its AI research strengths with the UK's testing and evaluation expertise, and follows Prime Minister Carney's signing of the Call for Control of Frontier AI Models at the UN General Assembly last month.
Full report
On October 13, 2026, Canada and the United Kingdom renewed their partnership on artificial intelligence security in London, announced during a visit by the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation.
The renewed deal focuses on three areas: developing AI security standards, including interoperable standards for broad uptake of good practice; enhancing information-sharing, including through appropriate Five Eyes channels for sensitive reporting, plus sharing lessons on domestic resilience; and expanding technical cooperation, including regular exchanges on frontier AI capabilities and emerging risks, staff exchanges and coordinated evaluation activities.
It builds on the UK-Canada Science of AI Safety Partnership first announced in May 2024 and the UK-Canada Growth and Innovation partnership signed in 2025, and recommits to cooperation between the Canadian AI Safety Institute and the UK AI Security Institute.
Context: UK Prime Minister Burnham committed last month at the UN General Assembly to putting AI at the heart of the UK's G20 Presidency next year; Prime Minister Carney signed the Call for Control of Frontier AI Models on September 21; and Minister Solomon convened like-minded ministers on September 18 to strengthen international AI safety cooperation. In June 2026 the two countries also jointly called, through the Five Eyes cyber security partnership, for organizations to act on rapidly evolving cyber-AI risk.
