Federal government invests over $8M to redevelop Winnipeg's century-old Downtown Y
Ottawa is putting $8,059,309 into the Downtown Y Redevelopment Project through the Direct Delivery stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund, with the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg contributing $3,460,690.

Built in 1913, the Downtown Y has served downtown Winnipeg for generations. The redevelopment will modernize the historic space into a more accessible, sustainable and inclusive hub: elevators, changerooms, aquatics and fitness areas and energy systems will be upgraded, while newcomer and mental health programs and community classrooms expand.
The $51-billion Build Communities Strong Fund supports infrastructure across economic prosperity, housing, sport, education, health, transit and climate adaptation, and is projected to boost Canada's GDP by $95 billion over the next decade.

The announcement was made in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 28, 2026. The fund is a cornerstone of the government's plan to build the infrastructure needed to build Canada strong, and will be matched by nearly $17 billion from the provinces, plus billions leveraged from municipal, territorial and private partners. Under the Direct Delivery stream, at least 10% of funding will go to Indigenous communities.
"Investing in local, grassroots infrastructure means residents will live healthier, more connected lives," said Ben Carr, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre. Cordella Friesen, President and CEO of YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, called the investment a cornerstone of downtown Winnipeg's renaissance.
