ByteDance, Alibaba, Tencent Order 3M+ Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 GPUs Worth $35B+; Nvidia Says It Can't Fill Them

Reuters reports the three Chinese tech giants jointly ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 workstation GPUs worth over $35 billion; Nvidia told customers it cannot guarantee fulfillment as demand far exceeds planned 2027 production.

Why it matters

Export controls have not dented Chinese demand for Nvidia hardware — they have redirected it. Three tech giants placed one of the largest GPU orders in history, worth over $35 billion, and Nvidia admits it cannot build enough cards. It is the clearest evidence yet of Chinese buyers pivoting to export-compliant workstation cards.

Full report

ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have jointly ordered more than 3 million Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 workstation GPUs at about $11,400 each, for a combined list value above $35 billion, Reuters reported on October 20, citing people familiar with the matter.

Nvidia has told customers it cannot guarantee it will fill the orders: demand has outrun planned production. Sources said Nvidia's worldwide production of the card in 2027 may not exceed 3 million units, while total orders from Chinese customers already top 6 million; individual partners might receive only 5% to 10% of the quantities they requested.

The RTX PRO 5500 is a Blackwell workstation GPU with 84GB of ECC GDDR7 memory and 1,398 GB/s of bandwidth, aimed mainly at AI inference. With US export controls barring sales of Nvidia's B300 data-center chips to China and H200 exports individually reviewed, the RTX PRO 5500 is among the most powerful Nvidia chips Chinese buyers can still legally purchase.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said US restrictions cut Nvidia's share of China's AI data-center chip market from near monopoly to effectively nothing. Analysts note the RTX PRO 5500 shares the GB202 chip with the consumer flagship RTX 5090, so the giant professional-card orders could further squeeze consumer GPU supply.
