China weather agency: widespread rain, snow and cold snap peaks Oct 17, Beijing urban area hits torrential levels

China Meteorological Administration keeps three blue alerts (rainstorm, gale, severe convection) in force; Beijing's urban districts averaged 51.7 mm in 16 hours, with downpours of 100–150 mm expected in parts of Liaoning, Hubei and Hunan.
What happened
China's National Meteorological Center kept three blue-level alerts in force at 18:00 today — for rainstorms, gales and severe convective weather. A strong cold front is bringing widespread rain, wind and falling temperatures from the night of Oct 16 through Oct 18, with Oct 17 the peak of the event.
Key figures
The heaviest 24-hour rainfall nationwide (09:00 Oct 16–08:00 Oct 17) hit Honghe, Yunnan at 129 mm. Beijing averaged 48.3 mm of rain from 23:00 Oct 16 to 15:00 Oct 17 — heavy rain — while the city's urban districts averaged 51.7 mm, reaching torrential-rain levels. From 20:00 Oct 17 to 20:00 Oct 18, parts of southern Liaoning, southern Hubei and northwestern Hunan could see 100–150 mm downpours; parts of southern Henan, eastern Hubei and northern Hunan face thunderstorms with gusts above force 10.
Cold snap and impacts
Temperatures are falling 4–8°C across the northwest, Inner Mongolia, northern, northeastern and central China, with local drops over 10°C and gusts of 7–9 on the Beaufort scale. Chief forecaster Fang Chong noted the unusually strong autumn rain in the north; the rains help reservoirs and drought-hit farmland but risk secondary geological disasters and travel disruption. The public is advised to dress warmly and avoid high-risk geological zones.
