China launches six Yaogan satellites on a single Long March 4B rocket

· N GLOBE

At 3:25 a.m. Beijing time on October 24, a Long March 4B rocket lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center carrying Yaogan-53 satellites 07-09 and Yaogan-56 satellites 19-21 — six satellites in total — all of which entered their preset orbits. It was the 673rd flight of the Long March rocket family.

Why it matters

One rocket carrying two remote-sensing groups in a single launch reflects the pace at which China is building out these constellations: both groups already had three satellites each (01-03) launched in early September, and this flight adds the next batch. The officially stated uses are all civilian remote-sensing applications.

Full report

According to Xinhua, a Long March 4B carrier rocket blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 3:25 a.m. Beijing time on October 24, carrying Yaogan-53 satellites 07-09 and Yaogan-56 satellites 19-21. The satellites entered their preset orbits successfully.

The officially stated uses are scientific experiments, land and resources surveys, crop yield estimation, and disaster prevention and reduction. China-in-Space, a specialist space publication, adds that commercial firms MinoSpace and GalaxySpace contributed to the development of the groups, without specifying which satellites or how much each contributed.

The launch marked the 673rd mission of the Long March rocket family. The two groups each launched three 01-03 satellites in early September; numbering suggests Yaogan-56 may see further batches, but no future launch schedule has been officially announced.
