Xi leads Chinese leadership in flower-basket tribute to national heroes on Martyrs' Day
Xi Jinping and other top Chinese leaders presented flower baskets at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tian'anmen Square to mark Martyrs' Day, one day before China's National Day.

BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior Party and state leaders attended a ceremony on Wednesday morning to present flower baskets to fallen national heroes at Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing, according to Xinhua.
Attendees included Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi and Han Zheng, joined by representatives from all walks of life. At 10 a.m., those present sang the national anthem and observed a moment of silence for the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the Chinese people and the development of the People's Republic of China.
Nine large flower baskets were placed in front of the Monument to the People's Heroes. Xi and the other leaders walked up to the foot of the monument, where he straightened the ribbons on the baskets, before walking around the monument to pay their tributes.
Martyrs' Day was established in 2014 and is observed each year on September 30, one day before National Day, commemorating those who gave their lives for national independence and prosperity. Since its establishment, Xi — also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission — has maintained the tradition of paying homage to the fallen heroes on the day.
