China holiday spending: retail sales up 5.3% in first three days of National Day break

China's Ministry of Commerce says revenue at 78 major shopping streets and commercial districts rose 5.3% year on year in Oct 1–3; trade-in subsidies drove 19.63 billion yuan in sales.
Why it matters
Early data from the first three days of China's week-long National Day holiday (Oct 1–3) shows consumer demand holding up: foot traffic at 78 major shopping streets and commercial districts monitored by the Ministry of Commerce rose 3.4% year on year, while revenue increased 5.3%. It is the first hard data point on holiday spending, closely watched as a signal for fourth-quarter consumption.
Full report
The government's consumer goods trade-in program generated 19.63 billion yuan in sales during the first three days, benefiting 3.48 million consumers: 46,000 vehicles traded in, producing 7.45 billion yuan in new car sales; 1.51 million home appliances worth 6.5 billion yuan; and 1.71 million digital and smart devices worth 4.9 billion yuan. Hainan duty-free sales reached 358 million yuan, up 8.85%.
Travel was also strong: railway passenger trips hit a record 25.2 million on Oct 1 alone, and authorities projected 2.13 billion cross-regional passenger trips over the seven-day holiday, about 300 million a day. Local governments are hosting more than 20,000 events and distributing about 310 million yuan in consumer vouchers and subsidies to encourage spending.
Note
These are official data released by the Ministry of Commerce, reporting verified figures only. The full-week results will be published after the holiday ends.
