Tencent announces dual-currency bond offering of at least $4.5B to fund AI buildout

Tencent said Oct. 12 it plans a new dual-currency (US dollar and offshore yuan) bond offering of at least $4.5 billion under its global medium-term note program, returning to bond markets just four months after its $4.66B June sale, as H1 capex doubled to 96.3B yuan.
Why it matters
Chinese tech giant Tencent announced Monday it is returning to global bond markets with a new dual-currency bond offering to finance its AI infrastructure expansion. According to Reuters, which cited the term sheet, the deal would raise at least $4.5 billion — the company's second major debt raise in four months, underscoring how fast the AI compute race is consuming tech companies' cash flows.
Full report
In an investor announcement dated Oct. 12, Tencent said it proposes to issue senior unsecured notes under its global medium-term note program. The term sheet seen by Reuters points to 10- and 20-year US dollar notes alongside 10- and 30-year offshore yuan (CNH) notes, with the final size and currency split subject to market conditions. The Hong Kong exchange disclosure index records the filing at 8 a.m. Hong Kong time.
Tencent said completion depends on market conditions, funding needs and investor demand, and proceeds would go to general corporate purposes including AI product and service development. In the first half of 2026, Tencent's capital expenditures more than doubled year-on-year to 96.3 billion yuan (about $14.4 billion), poured into AI computing gear, cloud services and data centers.
Background
In June, Tencent raised $4.66 billion in a dual-currency bond deal, its largest since 2020, drawing more than $17 billion in orders. Bloomberg reported on Oct. 8 that Tencent was considering an offshore bond sale of up to $5 billion. The pattern is global: SoftBank raised about $11.1 billion in a corporate bond sale in September, while Microsoft, Meta and Amazon are all borrowing heavily to build data centers.
