Tianshui kindergarten lead-poisoning case: operator gets life sentence in first-instance verdict

· N GLOBE

The Lanzhou Intermediate People's Court on Oct 16 handed down first-instance verdicts in the Tianshui kindergarten lead-poisoning case: operator Li Huifang got life imprisonment, executive principal Zhu Jinglin 15 years, and four kitchen staff 6 to 8 years.

Why it matters

The lead-poisoning case at the Hesh Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui is one of China's most-watched campus food-safety scandals this year. The court found the kindergarten had mixed toxic non-food substances into children's food, causing lead poisoning, with circumstances deemed especially serious — and handed the main culprit a life sentence.

The verdict

The Lanzhou Intermediate People's Court of Gansu delivered first-instance verdicts on the afternoon of Oct 16: Li Huifang, the kindergarten's de facto operator, was convicted of producing and selling toxic or harmful food and sentenced to life imprisonment, deprived of political rights for life, with 500,000 yuan of personal assets confiscated. Executive principal Zhu Jinglin received 15 years in prison and a 300,000-yuan fine.

Four kitchen staff members — Niu Aiyuan, Wen Yafang, He Xuxia and An Chunling — were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 8 to 6 years, plus fines.

Background

The kindergarten is located in Maiji District, Tianshui, Gansu. The court found that toxic non-food raw materials were added during food preparation, leading to lead poisoning among young children, with especially serious circumstances.
