Why it matters
China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said Saturday that 10.52 million new urban jobs were created in the first nine months of 2026, meeting 87.7% of the annual target. The surveyed urban unemployment rate averaged 5.2% from January to August, and officials described employment as "generally stable."
Services-sector jobs policy
Vice Minister and spokesperson Li Zhong said the ministry will work with other departments on a policy document to promote employment through services-sector development, so services can better act as the main channel for absorbing jobs. Beijing will also keep employment steady in labour-intensive industries and seek new opportunities in emerging and future industries.
Social insurance figures
As of end-September, 1.079 billion people were enrolled in basic pension insurance, 251 million in unemployment insurance and 327 million in work-injury insurance; the three social insurance funds had a combined balance of 11.2 trillion yuan. Source: Reuters.
