Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen defeated French Open winner Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in Beijing, becoming the first Chinese player to win the China Open and claiming her first WTA 1000 title after an elbow-injury layoff.

Why it matters

No Chinese player had ever won the China Open women's singles title since the tournament began in 2004. Wildcard Zheng, ranked world No. 54, beat world No. 5 Andreeva in straight sets, completing a remarkable comeback after right-elbow surgery and a long layoff.

BEIJING, Oct 11 (Reuters) — Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen beat French Open winner Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday to win the China Open, becoming the first Chinese player to lift the trophy.

After the two exchanged early breaks, Andreeva went 5-4 up in the first set. Zheng saved three break points to level at 5-5, then broke in the next game to take the set. At 4-4 in the second, Andreeva saved three break points of her own, but a persistent Zheng broke again and landed a perfect ace in the next game to clinch her first WTA 1000 title and her first trophy of the year.

Zheng missed much of last year and early 2026 with an elbow injury to her dominant right arm. "The feeling was incredible to win here in Beijing... it's one of my dreams," the 24-year-old said. Her China Open campaign ended in heartbreak last year when she was forced to retire after aggravating the injury.

Both Zheng and Andreeva now head to the Wuhan Open starting Monday, with the US Open quarter-finalist Zheng eyeing a return to the world's top 20.
