The backdrop is protests by opposition parties and student organisations against the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls: the opposition alleges irregularities in the exercise and demands the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. On Friday, several Left parties and student leaders marched near Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, demanding Kumar's removal and opposing the SIR.
Delhi Traffic Police issued a diversion advisory for Saturday: with large numbers of people expected to move from Bangla Sahib Gurudwara towards Jantar Mantar, diversions apply from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and commuters were advised to avoid affected roads. Separately, the Congress party and INDIA bloc parties plan a rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1 demanding the chief election commissioner's resignation; a hunger strike by five Jamia Millia Islamia students entered its 13th day on Saturday, demanding restoration of the students' union and removal of the university's chief proctor.
