Delhi's air quality rebounds to 'moderate' after rain clears out, with very poor pockets remaining

· N GLOBE

Friday's rain washed Delhi's AQI down to around 90; clear, dry weather has pushed it back into the 130–190 moderate range, and the Met department forecasts no rain through October 22.

Why it matters

New Delhi's brief spell of clean air is over. Friday's (Oct 17) showers had washed the city's AQI down to around 90 (satisfactory), but clear, dry weather has pushed pollution back into the moderate range. The India Meteorological Department forecasts no rain through October 22, with maximum temperatures climbing to 32–34°C — conditions that let vehicle emissions, road dust and construction dust push pollution higher.

Key points

Central Pollution Control Board 24-hour averages show the citywide AQI rising from about 90 on Friday to the 130–190 range (moderate) over October 17–18. Near-real-time station readings diverge sharply: Anand Vihar hit 348 (very poor), Mundka 227, and ITO briefly read 430 — highlighting extreme local variation.

Live monitoring across 67 stations put the citywide average at 167 (Moderate) at 4:00 PM IST on October 18, with PM2.5 at 149.8 µg/m³ — above the 30-day average of 109.1. Thirty-two stations sat in the moderate band. IQAir noted Delhi remained among the world's most polluted major cities as of 11:00 AM IST.

With skies clear and winds light, local emissions are the main driver, raising short-term respiratory risk. Sensitive groups are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure, keep windows closed and wear masks outside.

Full report

Each October, as the monsoon withdraws, temperature inversions and a shallow boundary layer trap pollutants near the surface — India's most challenging pollution season. The Met department says no rain is coming this week and it will only get warmer; real relief must wait for the next monsoon, and lasting improvement depends on stronger enforcement against sources like stubble burning.
