· N GLOBE

India's opposition INDIA bloc protest demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation entered its third day on Oct. 8, with leaders visiting Rajghat and traffic restrictions across New Delhi.

Why it matters

The opposition INDIA bloc's protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar entered its third day on Oct. 8. Opposition MPs, after attending a lunch hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, travelled to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, with heavy police deployment at the site. The opposition alleges electoral malpractice ("vote chori"); no official findings have been announced.

Full report

The protest began Tuesday with an opposition march from Parliament's Makar Dwar to the Election Commission office (Nirvachan Sadan). After a confrontation near the NITI Aayog office over the lack of permission, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi entered the Akashvani Bhawan to bypass the security perimeter, staging a sit-in of about nine hours. Both were detained for a couple of hours before being released.

Rahul Gandhi, on the FIR filed after the Akashvani protest, said his goal was "100 FIRs." Traffic was disrupted across Delhi on Thursday: Delhi Traffic Police restricted movement on JLN Marg, Minto Road and Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Marg from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for a symbolic rally by women students of Zakir Hussain Delhi College, and issued advisories around Rajghat. The agitation continues.
