The Cockroach Janta Party called a fresh "Chalo Jantar Mantar" march for 10 a.m. Sunday demanding the election chief's resignation; three leaders detained Saturday will be produced before a magistrate this morning, and the UN human rights office expressed concern over mass detentions.

Why it matters

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has called on supporters to march to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over voter-list controversies. Delhi Police have denied permission for the march; more than 40,000 police and paramilitary personnel are deployed across the capital, several metro stations were shut on Saturday, traffic diversions are in effect at more than 30 major junctions from 6 a.m. today, and mobile internet services in the central business district were suspended on Saturday.

Latest developments

Three CJP leaders placed under preventive arrest at the airport on Saturday — Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka — are to be produced before an executive magistrate at the Delhi Cantt police station at 9 a.m. today. Reuters cited a Home Ministry official saying more than 2,000 people were detained across the city on Saturday; some local media put the figure above 3,000, with around 400 more detained in Mumbai. UN Human Rights spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan issued a statement calling on authorities to fully respect the right to peaceful assembly; the Supreme Court is also set to hear today a petition by MP Menaka Guruswamy challenging the detentions.

Background

The dispute stems from the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the opposition says improperly removed 130 million voter entries to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling BJP; the ruling party denies the charge. This is the latest in a series of CJP protests over recent days, after markets in parts of Delhi shut down during Saturday's demonstrations.
