New Delhi markets shut down amid CJP protest day

Major markets including Connaught Place, Karol Bagh and Sadar Bazar stayed shut on Saturday, October 10, amid the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar; some traders questioned the shutdown, citing festive-season stock bought on credit.
Why it matters
A rare mass shutdown across central New Delhi's commercial districts. With the Diwali sales season about to begin, traders' festive stock was largely bought on credit or bank loans, so a day of closure is costly — and it shows how directly the protest is hitting the capital's daily economy.
Full report
Ahead of the CJP (Cockroach Janta Party) protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10, several major New Delhi markets announced a day's closure. The New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) issued an advisory asking all shops, restaurants and offices in Connaught Place to remain shut and urging owners to stay vigilant to avoid any unpleasant situation. NDTA president Atul Bhargava said the body would write to the authorities seeking relocation of the protest away from Jantar Mantar.
The Ajmal Khan Road Vyapar Mandal in Karol Bagh advised shopkeepers to keep shops closed until 2 pm and reassess afterwards; Devraj Baweja of the Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh said a shutdown had been announced for Sadar Bazar; the New Lajpat Nagar Market Traders Association also issued a closure advisory in Hindi.
Not all traders agreed. Sanjay Bhargava of the Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal questioned the closures, saying the market had received no formal circular from Delhi Police; he noted festive stock is bought on credit or bank loans, and with Navratri starting October 11 followed by Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath, the timing hurts traders badly.
Background: today's CJP protest demands the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar; Delhi Police deployed over 30,000 personnel, closed entry and exit at 45 metro stations, and suspended mobile internet within a 4-km radius of central New Delhi. Related detentions were covered in our earlier report.
