Delhi inaugurates AI-powered pollution command centre to track dust sources in real time

· N GLOBE

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta opened the DPCC Integrated Command and Control Centre at DMRC IT Park, Shastri Park; AI cameras watch 700-plus construction sites ahead of the winter smog season.

Why it matters

Delhi's air quality typically worsens sharply in winter, when local emissions combine with weather that traps pollutants. The new centre is designed to turn monitoring into enforcement: when a monitored site spikes, alerts go to the responsible department and site owner — a test that begins immediately with the winter action plan taking effect on November 1.

Full report

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the Delhi Pollution Control Committee's Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on Thursday, October 1, at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's IT Park in Shastri Park, east Delhi. The launch was part of the Seva Sankalp Campaign. Delhi Environment Minister Sardar Manjinder Singh Sirsa and other dignitaries attended.

The centre enables round-the-clock, real-time monitoring of pollution sources across the capital, combining AI-based analysis with complaints and field-inspection data so departments can coordinate action faster. Its stated operating principle is "Detect, Analyse, Act, Verify." AI-driven cameras watch more than 700 construction sites larger than 500 square metres to curb PM10 dust, GPS tracks mechanical road-sweeping machines and pollution-control towers, and hotspot monitoring covers open burning.

Rapid-action teams called "Vayu Rakshaks," equipped with GPS-enabled vehicles and body cameras, are deployed across 39 divisions to investigate local pollution sources such as garbage burning and traffic bottlenecks. The winter action plan, in force from November 1 through February 2027, adds staggered office timings, doubled parking charges, a ban on non-BS-VI vehicles from outside the city, and a "No PUCC, No Fuel" campaign at petrol pumps.
