The opposition INDIA bloc marches to the Supreme Court today demanding the chief election commissioner's resignation; six central metro stations close entry/exit 6 AM–4 PM.

Why it matters

New Delhi is bracing for major disruptions on Monday, October 12, as the opposition INDIA bloc stages a mass protest march to the Supreme Court demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has closed entry and exit at six central metro stations from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM for security reasons, while interchange facilities remain available.

The affected stations are Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road. The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory on Sunday warning of traffic restrictions and diversions across Central and New Delhi from 6 AM, urging commuters to plan journeys in advance and allow extra travel time (helplines 1095 / 011-25844444).

The Congress has named the march "Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy," with participants assembling at 1:30 PM at the Connaught Place–Barakhamba Road junction. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called on youth, opposition parties and civil society groups to join the march in an X post. A delegation of senior leaders plans to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, though sources said Sunday night that the CJI had not agreed to meet Gandhi and Rajya Sabha opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge. Just two days earlier, on October 10, authorities shut 45 to 57 metro stations to manage protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), keeping the capital under heightened security for days.
