On Oct 3, protesters converged on New Delhi's Jantar Mantar to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation; police deployed about 5,000 personnel and briefly closed 12 metro stations.

Why it matters

Thousands of protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Oct 3 to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral-roll irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Organisers warned of a much larger agitation on Oct 10 if Kumar does not step down. Delhi Police deployed about 5,000 personnel in the capital's core, briefly closed 12 metro stations and suspended internet services in central Delhi.

According to PTI, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said supporters from across India would converge on New Delhi's Jantar Mantar on Oct 10 if Kumar does not resign, stressing the protest would follow a peaceful, Gandhian path. The call followed a CJP protest at Mumbai's Shivaji Park on Friday, after which police registered an FIR against the organisers.

Delhi Police had denied permission and, under prohibitory orders covering Sept 30 to Oct 5, banned the assembly of five or more unauthorised persons in New Delhi, North and Central districts. Minor scuffles broke out as police stopped protesters; AISA president Neha Bora was detained during the demonstration. Internet services were suspended in central Delhi, and the entry and exit gates of 12 metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat, were closed.

Separately, about 120 marchers from Ladakh, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, were detained at Delhi's border while demanding Sixth Schedule status for the Union Territory.
