JNU dismisses professor and Congress MP Bimol Akoijam over sexual harassment findings

Jawaharlal Nehru University on October 9 dismissed with immediate effect Congress Lok Sabha MP and School of Social Sciences professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, after an Internal Committee inquiry into sexual harassment allegations recommended a "major punishment."
Why it matters
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi on October 9 issued a dismissal order with immediate effect against Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, the Congress MP for Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha and a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in the School of Social Sciences. The order, signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, said the university's Internal Committee (IC) had inquired into the allegations and recommended a "major punishment" under UGC reference F.91-1/2013 (TFGS)/10(1) and Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules.
The allegations and the inquiry
In May 2026, 11 women students filed sexual harassment complaints with the university's Internal Complaints Committee, describing inappropriate remarks, advances at gatherings and conduct during academic interactions; one allegation reportedly linked marks to sexual favours. Students said the administration had not acted adequately on their complaint, and on September 16 the Delhi Commission for Women, under chairperson Lata Gupta, took suo motu cognisance and sought a factual report. Campus protests, including by the ABVP, also drew attention to the case in September.
Denial and political fallout
Akoijam had earlier denied the allegations, calling media coverage a "media trial" and propaganda, and insisted the truth would emerge. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Inner Manipur on a Congress ticket in 2024. The case has spilled into politics: the BJP's women's wing protested in Delhi on Friday, demanding his expulsion from the party and arrest. Source: ANI.
