Delhi crackdown: Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee detained as some 1,000 held over CJP protest

Delhi Police detained AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee with five MPs on Saturday, as about 1,000 political leaders and activists were held ahead of a protest demanding the election commissioner's resignation.
Why it matters
New Delhi saw sweeping detentions on Saturday, October 10, as police moved against opposition leaders ahead of a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Former Delhi chief minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal was detained outside his residence while marching toward Jantar Mantar. The Daily Jagran put the total number of political leaders, activists and citizens detained at about 1,000, with central Delhi under a heavy security lockdown.
Who was detained
Kejriwal was intercepted while leading a march to join the CJP's anti-CEC demonstration; he had earlier called the security clampdown "worse than Emergency." Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and five Trinamool Congress MPs, including Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen, were detained near South Avenue and taken away in a prison van to the Dwarka North police station; Banerjee said they were "kidnapped and driven around in a prison van for two hours" and vowed to join the opposition I.N.D.I.A march on Monday. NDTV reported that former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar were also detained. Senior AAP leader Atishi condemned the crackdown: "how many people will you put behind bars to save Gyanesh Kumar?"
The protest and the lockdown
The CJP called for an October 10 rally at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls — the "vote theft" charge. Authorities shut entry and exit gates at several metro stations, imposed traffic restrictions, and markets including Khan Market and Connaught Place stayed shut.
