New Delhi completes 400,000-building survey: 21,000 homes found in commercial misuse

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi completed a survey of nearly 400,000 buildings on Oct 14 under Supreme Court orders, finding about 21,000 homes misused as commercial premises; notices and sealing will follow in phases.
Why it matters
This is Delhi's largest-ever building-use survey: roughly 5% of surveyed homes were found in commercial misuse. Civic officials say notices will be issued and sealing proceedings will follow in phases, affecting violating owners and tenants alike.
Full report
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) completed the exercise on Oct 14: acting on Supreme Court orders, it surveyed about 399,000 buildings across 12 zones, 670 colonies and 178 wards over the past three months, identifying 21,099 cases of residential premises used for commercial activities such as coaching centres, restaurants, grocery stores and sweet shops.
A senior MCD official said notices will be issued and sealing proceedings initiated in a phased manner; 30 to 40 properties have already been sealed.
The drive is part of a city-wide building-safety crackdown: after a paying-guest building collapse in Satya Niketan killed seven people on Sept 6, the MCD also surveyed 2,453 PG buildings housing about 50,500 residents, and the Delhi High Court is hearing related public-interest petitions.
