Delhi Metro adds 20 weekday trips as GRAP Stage 1 kicks in over worsening air quality

· N GLOBE

Delhi's AQI rose to 244 on Oct 21, entering the 'poor' category; the Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan, and DMRC will run 20 extra weekday trips from Oct 22.

Why it matters

Winter is Delhi's worst air-pollution season every year. Adding trips is the standard GRAP Stage 1 response: pulling commuters off private cars and onto the metro to cut tailpipe emissions, alongside intensified dust control at construction sites. Forecasters expect air quality to stay in the 'poor' range over the coming days.

Full report

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR on Oct 21, after the city's AQI climbed to 244 at 2 p.m. — the 'poor' category, up from 179 (moderate) the previous day.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced it will operate 20 additional train trips on weekdays (Monday to Friday) starting Thursday, Oct 22, to encourage more commuters to choose the metro over personal vehicles and reduce transport-related emissions.

Delhi's overall AQI stood at 226 at 7 a.m. on Oct 22: 276 near AIIMS, 237 around Akshardham and Anand Vihar, 238 at India Gate, 280 in the ITO area, and 306 at Chandni Chowk — in the 'very poor' category.

GRAP Stage 1 also bans coal and firewood in tandoors at hotels, restaurants and open eateries and curbs diesel generator sets across Delhi and adjoining areas. DMRC has meanwhile intensified dust-control drives at construction sites, installing more than 250 anti-smog and mist guns, covering construction materials and requiring wheel-washing for outgoing vehicles.
