Delhi Metro to Add 20 Extra Weekday Trips from Oct. 22 as GRAP Stage-I Kicks In

Air quality slips into the "poor" band across Delhi-NCR, triggering GRAP Stage-I; DMRC also steps up dust control at construction sites.
Why it matters
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced on Oct. 21 that it will run 20 additional trips across its network on weekdays (Monday to Friday) starting Oct. 22, urging commuters to switch from private vehicles to public transport. The move follows a sharp deterioration in air quality: the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said Delhi's AQI rose from 179 (moderate) on Oct. 20 to 244 (poor) at 2 pm on Oct. 21, prompting the invocation of Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR.

DMRC will also intensify anti-pollution drives at construction sites and surrounding areas: suppressing dust inside construction zones, clearing road dust from adjoining roads, and removing garbage from footpaths and road medians. Engineers will inspect sites to ensure construction materials are properly covered and wheel-wash facilities for outgoing vehicles work correctly. Stage-I GRAP measures include mechanized road sweeping, water sprinkling to control dust, a ban on open waste burning, strict PUC enforcement, and a requirement that hotels and restaurants stop using coal- or firewood-fired tandoors.
