Delhi CM makes surprise inspection of Mukherjee Nagar, promises better lighting, toilets and libraries

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a surprise evening inspection of coaching hub Mukherjee Nagar on Oct. 13, sitting with students at a tea shop before ordering a streetlight and CCTV audit, conversion of a shuttered public toilet into a 'Pink Toilet', sites for a free library, and fire-safety checks on coaching buildings.
Why it matters
Mukherjee Nagar is the nerve centre for UPSC civil-services aspirants, with tens of thousands of outstation students renting rooms while they prepare. A CM-led night inspection puts their top concerns — lighting, rents, toilets, libraries — directly on the table, answering the capital's education hub at its most grassroots level.
Full report
On the evening of October 13, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a surprise inspection of Mukherjee Nagar, the capital's major coaching and educational hub. She sat down at a tea shop and heard students out on safety, housing and civic amenities.
Students flagged a shortage of affordable libraries (frequent closures, high fees); high PG rents, security deposits and brokerage fees, cramped rooms and poor ventilation; inadequate street lighting at night for women students; accumulated garbage, foul smells and unhygienic lanes in Mukherjee Nagar and Nehru Vihar; drinking-water contamination fears during the monsoon; and loudspeakers blaring at night disturbing study.
The CM directed officials and police to review streetlight and CCTV coverage and functioning and fix gaps; enforce rules on complaints about illegally dark-tinted window films; convert a long-closed public toilet into a 'Pink Toilet' and make it operational at the earliest, plus identify sites for more toilet blocks; examine libraries' buildings and safety standards and find plots or community buildings for a free library; inspect coaching-institute buildings for fire safety and exit routes; and enforce loudspeaker time limits and noise regulations.
Context: on October 12 the CM met women college representatives and pledged roughly 100,000 smart streetlights across Delhi linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre under annual maintenance contracts.
