Building Collapse in Northeast Delhi Kills at Least 3, Rescue Underway
A multi-storey residential building in New Seemapuri, northeast Delhi, collapsed around 3:30 p.m. on Oct 7, killing at least three people and injuring several; rescue teams are searching for those trapped.
Why it matters
This is the second fatal building collapse in Delhi within a month. On Sept 6, a five-storey PG building in southwest Delhi's Satya Niketan collapsed, killing 7 and injuring 12 — putting the safety of the city's aging buildings back in the spotlight.
What happened
The collapse occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct 7) near Idgah Machhli Mandi in New Seemapuri, northeast Delhi. The Delhi Fire Service dispatched fire tenders after receiving the alert.
Delhi Police, the Delhi Fire Service, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) are all involved in the rescue; traffic police imposed restrictions around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar.
Casualties (figures still being updated)
According to theDailyJagran's updated reporting, three people died — a girl aged about 12, a 21-year-old woman named Gulafsa who was about four months pregnant, and a toddler of about 18 months; eight were injured and 11 rescued. An earlier PTI dispatch reported at least five injured and several feared trapped. Figures remain provisional.
Background and investigation
Councillor Pankaj Luthra, who visited the site, said the building was about 40 to 50 years old; the MCD described it as a three-storey structure in a jhuggi-jhopri (slum) cluster. Sources differ on the number of floors (three to five); officials have not confirmed.
Some residents said cracks appeared after the 4.9-magnitude tremor felt on the night of Oct 6, but officials say the exact cause is under investigation.
