India's Supreme Court held a special Sunday hearing on October 11 over detentions and transport restrictions during the CJP protest, issuing notices to the Home Secretary, Delhi Police Commissioner and the metro corporation, and directing services to run normally.

Why it matters

India's Supreme Court held a special Sunday hearing on October 11 on contempt and habeas corpus petitions over restrictions, detentions and transport shutdowns during the CJP protest in New Delhi. The bench issued notices to the Union Home Secretary, the Delhi Police Commissioner and the DMRC chairperson, directing them to respond. It instructed that metro and railway services must function normally unless specific public-order regulations require otherwise, and ordered an immediate review of police barricades so that free movement of people and traffic is permitted subject to traffic regulations.

Full report

The court held that no detention can take place except in accordance with law, that peaceful unarmed gatherings outside the Section 163 restriction zone cannot be curbed, and that the rights of lawyers and journalists performing their professional duties are protected. Internet facilities must remain undisturbed. All petitions will be taken up on Tuesday.

Latest developments

The DMRC reopened entry and exit gates at all 45 previously closed metro stations on October 10. The Indian Express reported that 214 affected passenger train services had been restored, with 30 still cancelled. More than 2,000 people were detained across Delhi on Saturday.
