Dubai registers over 196,000 vehicles in first half of 2026, more than 1,000 a day; RTA junction revamp halves travel time

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) says new vehicle registrations topped 196,000 in H1 2026, averaging over 1,000 a day; its Sobha roundabout-to-signal conversion cut travel time by 50% and peak queuing by 60%, with 35 testing centres planned by 2030.
Why it matters
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) reports that new vehicle registrations in the emirate exceeded 196,000 in the first half of 2026 — more than 1,000 a day on average — reflecting continued population and business growth and the mounting pressure on the road network.
To ease congestion, the RTA converted the Sobha roundabout into a signalized junction, cutting travel time by 50% and peak-hour queuing by 60%. The authority also plans to expand vehicle testing centres to 35 by 2030 to keep pace with the fast-growing vehicle fleet.
Full report
Dubai's population has grown rapidly in recent years, with vehicle registrations repeatedly hitting new highs. Transport experts say continued road expansion and a higher public-transport share will be key to keeping congestion in check.
The RTA says it will press ahead with smart-traffic systems and road-improvement projects, with further measures to be announced.
