Dubai flights to Riyadh cancelled en masse: Emirates drops 3, Etihad 8 after airport strikes

· N GLOBE

After the October 8 Houthi missile strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid airport, Emirates cancelled three Dubai–Riyadh flights, Etihad cancelled eight Abu Dhabi–Riyadh flights, and Dubai's flydubai dropped its Riyadh, Yanbu and Abha services.

Why it matters

On October 9–10, UAE carriers cancelled a wave of flights to Saudi Arabia: Emirates cancelled three Dubai–Riyadh flights (EK815, EK817, EK819), with the route expected to resume on October 11; Etihad cancelled eight Abu Dhabi–Riyadh flights over the two days; Dubai-based low-cost carrier flydubai cancelled its Dubai–Riyadh and Dubai–Yanbu flights through October 10, and its Dubai–Abha flights through October 11.

Cause: strikes on Riyadh airport

The cancellations follow the October 8 Houthi missile strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, which killed three people and wounded several (reported earlier today). Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation said the Riyadh and Abha strikes killed three and injured 36. European carriers also suspended Saudi routes: Air France through October 24, the Lufthansa Group on Riyadh and Dammam. Dubai International (DXB) is seeing knock-on delays; airlines advise passengers to check flight status and rebook or refund before heading to the airport.
