Dubai launches four-week trial of driverless Glydways transit at Bluewaters

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority on October 11 began a four-week trial of the Dubai Glydways automated transit system at Bluewaters, assessing safety and reliability, with future routes possibly linking Metro stations to residential and tourist districts.
Why it matters
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on October 11 launched trial operations of the Dubai Glydways automated transit system at Bluewaters, according to an official announcement by the Dubai Media Office (mediaoffice.ae). The system uses autonomous electric vehicles powered by artificial intelligence, operating on dedicated guideways, as a flexible and efficient solution for first- and last-mile journeys. RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer took a five-minute ride along the route to mark the start of the four-week trial.
Full report
Each vehicle carries four to six passengers at speeds of up to 50 km/h, with a range of 250 km on a single charge, and is equipped with 20 high-resolution LiDAR sensors plus radar and cameras. The system can virtually link more than 10 vehicles at intervals of less than one second, with a design capacity of more than 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions. The trial will assess the readiness of autonomous driving, sensing, communication and control systems, as well as user experience, journey times and ease of use.
Background
The trial builds on a cooperation agreement between RTA and Glydways, with Dubai Holding providing the testing environment and operational support. RTA says the results will decide wider rollout across the city; planned studies include a 2.8 km route linking National Paints Metro Station to Bluewaters, plus routes serving Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City.
